Levi Turner Burcham (1912-1987) received a B.S. degree in forestry from the University of California, Berkeley in 1941, an M.S. in ecology from the University of Nebraska in 1950, and a Ph. D. in geography from U.C. Berkeley in 1956. His career at the California Department of Forestry included responsibility for such areas as range improvement, watershed management, and soil vegetation studies. From 1964 to 1966, he headed an international program of environmental research for the United States Department of Defense in Washington, D.C.
